Biography:
Cowan was a native of St. John's town and brought a company of foot into Londonderry on the 10th of December together with the large party of horse brought by his brother in law William Stewart and former sherriff John Forward. An influential presbyterian, Cowan was one of the ten alderman forced to resign from the Derry Corporation by the 1705 Test Act. His daughter Mary married her first cousin and became the mother of the Marquis of Londonderry.
